Your Winter Hair Woes—Solved!

Parched Hair
The cause: Excessive heat-styling and arid winter air can sap moisture from hair.

The cure: Use a humidifier to add moisture to indoor air. Shampoo only every other day, so you can cut back on blow-drying. And look for products with moisture-attracting humectants.

Static
The cause: There’s no water in the air to neutralize static charges.

The cure: Switch to a conditioner with antistatic ingredients. Once hair is dry, mist your brush with hairspray before using it, and keep fabric-softener sheets handy at work should static strike midday.

Flatness
The cause: No humidity means no bounce.

The cure: Try a hydrating mousse or volumizers made for fine curls on even limp straight hair, because they’re fantastic moisturizers and don’t add weight.

Top Style Secrets – Be Eternally Chic!

Own the classics. Add this fab five to your closet: a black cashmere sweater, a white button-down shirt, a knee-length skirt (A-line if you’re pear-shaped or straight and slim if you’re top-heavy), a trench coat in a zingy color, and a classic handbag.

Shop with intention. If you peruse the racks willy-nilly, you risk ending up with a mishmash. Bring a list of needed items along with the pieces you’re trying to match.

Don’t obsess over size. Nearly every designer uses a different sizing chart, so you may be a 6 in one brand and a 10 in another. To feel fabulous, buy what fits and tear off the size tag.

Splurge on lingerie. Some essentials: a full slip in black and nude, seamless bras and panties, cute camisoles and high-quality, sheer black stockings (shiny ones are for professional tap dancers only).

Obey your baby toe. Never buy shoes that are uncomfortable when you try them on, thinking that you’ll break them in after you get home. It never works. Ever.

A Solution For Winter Pedicure Woes!

One cold, snowy day, in a nail salon in New Jersey, three girls (sisters, in fact!) waited and waited for their freshly polished toes to dry. Only then could they put their boots back on and brave the cold again.  They longed for a solution to the age-old problem of how to enjoy their favorite spa service in winter--and not freeze their booties off.  It was on this December day that bootie pies were born!

A New Way To Get Amazing Eyelashes

The latest cosmetic drug craze is called “Lumigan.” It’s supposed to work better than mascara. Lumigan increases the thickness and length of eyelashes.

The drug was once used for glaucoma patients, but the harmful “side effect” was pronounced eyelash growth. That’s when doctors started prescribing it to healthy women who wanted more dramatic lashes. It works wonders. At a cost of $150 per tube, it’s the same size as your mascara. You see it sold in your doctor’s office under the names “RevitaLash,” “Age Intervention Eyelash,” and “Lumigan.” Results are noticeable in only a month. Within ten weeks, your friends won’t believe those are your natural lashes.

Avoid Looking Chunky In Tights This Season

With colder weather coming, bare legs are pretty much banned.

The trick is to choose finely knit fabrics and leg-lengthening patterns (like vertical stripes) and to coordinate the shade of the tights with the color of your shoes or boots. What will also work for you:   hosiery with feminine, delicate, romantic details is a hot look this fall. Wear tights in slimming shades of black, gray, navy, or chocolate. But steer clear of those chunky cable-knits; they’ll only add inches.

Keep Your Holiday Nails Sparkling—Without Bubbles!

So why do you get those annoying bubbles when you polish your nails perfectly? There are two kinds of bubbles: air bubbles that get trapped in the liquid in the bottle, and vapor bubbles formed as the chemicals in the polish dry.

Never shake the bottle. Shaking whips air into the polish. To mix, roll the bottle back and forth in your palms.

Press on the brush. The bristles should fan out a bit. That delivers a thinner coat of polish, so it’s easier for bubbles (both kinds) to float to the top and evaporate.

Let nails dry naturally. The slower polish dries, the more time bubbles have to escape.

Mascara Myths

Myth: Your best bet is an all-purpose mascara that thickens, lengthens, and defines.
You’re better off choosing a mascara that fulfills your specific need. Mascara formulas usually have to sacrifice one benefit at the expense of another, because there can be only so many effective ingredients in one tube.

Myth: Blondes should always wear brown mascara instead of black.
Everyone should wear black—especially blondes. The whole point of mascara is to enhance the shape of the eye and define the lashes, and it should be visible, or you won’t get that effect.

Myth: Before applying, you have to pump the mascara wand a few times to get the right amount of color.
Not a good idea. It can load too much product on the brush and dry out the mascara, both of which cause clumping.

Myth: You should never apply mascara to your lower lashes.
Totally untrue. It’s the finishing touch to a smoky eye—just don’t be too heavy-handed, or the mascara will clump. For just a little definition every day, run the wand tip very lightly along the lower lashes.

Myth: Mascara should be the last thing you apply in the morning.
It should go on midway through the process. Apply one coat before shadow and concealer, then another once you’re done. The first coat allows you to clean up any smudges and clumps without wrecking the shadow or concealer; the second color adds extra color and definition.

How To Wear Shimmery Makeup

When applied properly, shimmer can give your skin a subtle glow. But there is a fine line between highlighting your features and looking like a Disney princess, so keep a few rules in mind. The following tips are from celebrity makeup artist Bobbi Brown:

Shimmer, not frost. Shimmer is sheer and lightweight, whereas frost tends to be opaque and heavy. Frost goes on thickly and looks dated, so make sure to choose your formula carefully.

Brush up. Shimmer looks best when blended well, so use a brush to apply it.  And keep that brush for shimmer alone; the last thing you want is your matte face powder tainted with bits of glitter. Remember to apply it after blush, so your cheeks aren’t lighter than the rest of your face.

Be a minimalist. Don’t wear it on the cheeks, eyes, and nails all at once. A bit on the cheeks and a dab on the eyes is all you need to open up and brighten your entire face.

Consider your age. Shimmer is not just for teenagers. Women of any age can wear it sparingly. If you have fine lines, use it anywhere with few wrinkles, like the apples of the cheeks and the lower lids. Otherwise, it will settle into the creases and draw attention to them.

The 5 Must-Haves For Fall

School-Boy Blazer

Choose a sport coat that is tailored specifically for women.  Sporting highly nipped waists, slouchy trousers, private-school sport coats, embroidered waistcoats and wide-peaked lapels, the mood is Edwardian and rather foppish.
Slouchy Pleated Trousers
Time to ditch the skinny pants for a pair of slouchy pleated trousers with a higher waist band and a wider flare.  They work best paired with a soft full top and chunky heels.
Colorful Bag
Make a statement with a bold bag.  This accessory will add a splash of color to fall's gray and silver trends.

Chunky Knit Cardigan
When it comes to dressing for fall, there's nothing quite like being warm and cozy.  Whether choosing a sweater coat, cardigan, tunic, or oversize turtleneck, the idea is to imagine yourself in a warm and fuzzy hug.
Stacked Heel Oxfords

They're a chic alternative to loafers for work; patterned socks and hosiery match well.  Look for perforated, kiltie details and signature laces, or ones with ribbon flourishes.  Masculine in shape but feminine in design, they look great with skirts.

Ladies...How The Right Clothes Can Trim Your Trouble Zones

I have broad shoulders.

Try jackets with seams that hit right at the shoulder or about a quarter of an inch before.  You fool the eye into thinking your shoulder width is as narrow as the seams.  Avoid shoulder pads and boatneck tops.

My arms are big.

It seems counterintuitive, but going sleeveless is best.  Bare arms create a long, fluid line.

I'm top-heavy.

Wear V-necks.  You're probably thinking, Won't that show too much?  But a triangular neck draws the eye up to your face, lengthens your neckline and breaks up the swath of cloth covering your chest--all of which adds up to a sleeker look.

My calves and ankles are a little chunky.

The solution is the right shoes.  Pumps, like the peep-toe update, have high heels, a side-baring cut and pointy toes, a trimming trio that make your calves look longer and sizzle-lean.  Slingbacks have a similar effect, but avoid heels with leg-shortening ankle straps.  Need boots?  Go with the ultra-stretch kind (think nylon) so you won't get hefty bunching at the ankles.

When To Splurge And When To Save
Spring For It:

Shoes—Splurge on a few $150-plus pairs; first-rate leather lasts longer. Five musts: strappy sandals, knee-high boots, ballet flats, walking shoes, and sexy stilettos.

Cookware—Cheap starter sets are often made of thin material, so food may burn. Instead, buy three quality pieces: an anodized aluminum or heavy-gauge skillet and saucepan and a cast-iron Dutch oven.

Winter Coat—Invest in the best you can afford in a classic cut, luxe fabric and neutral color, knee-length or longer. Five seasons from now, you’ll still appreciate the deal.

Chocolate—Top-notch chocolate is better for you dietwise:   it has more cocoa (a source of antioxidants) and less sugar and preservatives. Plus, it’s more satisfying.

Save Your $$$:

Shampoo and Conditioner—Most shampoos and conditioners have similar ingredients, so stick with drugstore brands and use only a dime-sized amount on average—any more will dry out your hair.

Cell Phone—With technology, it’s usually the bells and whistles that jack up the cost. Extra features may mean extra charges on your bill, too. To save, decide what features you need before you hit the store.

Wineglasses—The number-one reason you shouldn’t buy real crystal: chances are, you (or a guest) will break at least one in the near future. Besides, research has shown that what you’re sipping will taste the same in any glass, fancy or not.

Umbrella—Six little words: I left it on the bus.

Mineral Makeup Made Easy
Mineral makeup—foundation, blush, and shadow made of actual crushed from-the-earth minerals—is everywhere. How to master these tricky powders:

Shadow
You don’t get harsh lines or creases. Apply to your lid using a rounded shadow brush. Next, wipe the bristles off and blend to your brow with windshield-wiper brush motions.

Blush
Use a tiny bit. Because there are fewer additives in loose mineral blush than in regular pressed blush, the color appears more vibrant on skin. Apply with a rounded blush brush, tapping off all excess before dusting on.

Foundation
It gives you a healthy glow as if you’ve got the best nutrition and you work out. Swirl onto a fat brush, tapping off excess, and sweep across your face and neck.

The Latest Look In Earrings

Big earrings are still in, and this season it's all about the leaf motif.  Following the eco-conscious trend of getting back to nature, jewelry designs now have an organic feel.  Choose more subdued styles for day and save the sparkling ones for night.

The rule of thumb with jewelry this season?  Less is more.  Avoid accessory overload by leaving the chunky necklaces and oversize cocktail rings at home when you wear eye-catching designs on your ears.

What's In Store for Shoes this Fall?
Yes we’re still wearing our flip flops, but go into any shoe store and summer is over, it’s all about the Fall. Here's a preview of shoe trends for the 2007 fall season.

Platform Soles and Extreme Heels

Platform shoes are the hottest footwear trend for fall, but the also making news are the extreme heels that are being paired with platform soles. Chunky, high, angular, wide, and even cone-shaped, this fall, the heels will be more extreme and sexier than ever.

Boots and Booties
This fall, heeled boots and booties will be out in abundance, though for casual wear, you'll still be able to find plenty of flats.

While the slouchy look hasn't completely gone the wayside yet, it's threatening to look a little dated. On the opposite end of the trend spectrum, boots with buckles, fold-down collars and western accents are just coming into their own.

Open Toes, Peep Toes and Round Toes
Fans of pointy-toed shoes need not get upset -- there will always be a wide selection of styles to choose from. But if you love a round-toed shoe, you'll be in luck this fall, as footwear influenced by the 60s takes full advantage of the style.

Look for peep-toes and autumn sandals in some of the season's hottest fabrics: suede, velvet and patent.

Shoes for the Hottest Fall Fashions
Thanks to the popularity of mini dresses, this fall footed tights are even hotter than usual. Two shoe styles that work especially well with opaque hosiery are heeled mary janes, and ankle strap shoes. For a long, streamlined look, match tights to dark shoes. If you want to wear tights in a lighter or bright shade, match your shoes to one of the dominant hues in your skirt or dress.

Wide-legged trousers or jeans find their perfect match for those extreme heels, especially those with chunky heels and platform soles.

And while platform shoes also work great with skinny jeans (assuming of course, you can pull of wearing skinny jeans), a thin high heel will keep the look from getting too clunky. Ballet flats (round or pointy-toed) are also a great option with skinny jeans.

(Source: about.com)

The Colors of Autumn
this fall there is an abundance of colorful choices with particular emphasis on deep, rich colors like dark red, forest green, royal blue, fuschia, and golden yellow.

In evening shoes the hottest hues are black, red, purple and dark or natural metallics -- i.e. gold, silver, bronze and pewter.

Beauty DOs

DO find your perfect bronzer. Rule of thumb: If you tend to turn pink-y red in the sun, a copper shade will look best on your skin. If you go more brown, use a yellowish gold one.

DO smooth your bikini line. Stars get post-waxing exfoliation (like down-there facials) to keep bumps away, but you can achieve the same results in your shower by massaging in a fine-grain exfoliator or one with lactic acid.

DO a shampoo cocktail. I mix the drugstore kind with luxe stuff, or one that detangles with one that degreases. It’s also a great way to use up any you don’t love—blend them and you won’t mind them!

It's a new DO--if you don't go matchy-matchy.  A lack of contrast actually makes your eye color look less vibrant.  So pick shades that are darker or lighter than your irises.  For blue eyes, try navy or teal; for green, do olive or khaki; for brown, try bronze or copper.

When Big Isn't Better!

There are a few places where size doesn’t flatter—particularly, the three P’s: pores, pimples, and pooches (yes, as in tummies).

Pores: Pores don’t really shrink, but by unclogging them, you can make them appear smaller. De-gunk with a salicylic acid-based product and regular exfoliation. Microdermabrasion-like scrubs can stimulate collagen, which strengthens skin around the pores, making them look tighter.

Pimples: The fastest way to banish a pimple is with a cortisone injection. An at-home recipe: ice and a topical cortisone cream, followed by a dose of salicylic acid.

Pooches: Rodial Tummy Tuck, $145, a new topical stomach tightener, is being rubbed on the taut tummies of many a celebrity. Microfiber proteins offer instant firmness, but does it last? The product contains peptides, which promotes collagen and may have a tightening effect. It won’t be as dramatic as, say, a real tummy tuck.

Yoga Toes!
Since I have bunions the size of a small city, I was excited to read about YogaToes, which promised relief from a variety of foot ailments including bunions. Since my bunion pain increases each year, I am willing to try almost anything to prevent the dreaded bunion surgery!

I’ve been using the little rubber “toes” for about three weeks and while I haven’t experienced a miracle, but feet and bunions do feel better after I wear them for awhile.

YogaToes ® Toe Stretchers by YogaPro are worn snugly at the base of the toes as a passive way to exercise and stretch the feet. They are designed to relieve stress, provide a natural solution to foot pain, improve the circulation in legs and feet and increase foot and ankle strength and flexibility.

Some of the benefits of YogaToes include:
  • increased foot strength
  • greater toe & ankle flexibility
  • improved circulation in your legs
  • stretches Achilles tendons
  • stretches leg muscles
  • improves arches
  • corrects postural alignment
  • prevention of varicose veins, bunions & hammer toes

Dos & Don’ts of Wearing Shorts

If you’re wary of showing so much skin, DO try long cuts in a dark color. The most flattering are those that are sleek and tailored like pants.

DON’T wear teeny styles with an equally skimpy shirt. If you’re showing a lot of leg, wearing a full-coverage top looks new (and appropriate!) now.

DO follow this eternal rule of footwear: the shorter the shorts, the lower your heels should be. Flat sandals are always safe. Stilettos? Never.

DON’T wear skintight styles—they just look cheesy. And DO follow this rule: get looser as you go shorter.

Five Laws Of Summer Style

Love the Project Runway guru Tim Gunn?  Steal his ideas here.
Clean out your closet.  If you shop like a drunken sailor, chances are you own far more than you will ever wear.  If you can't remember when you wore it last or it doesn't fit, donate!
Rethink footwear.  Stilettos feel too "done" for summer; that's why ballet flats are perfect.  Don't be a rubber flip-flops victim!  They force perfectly stable women to waddle uncontrollably.
All those shorts in stores now?  Save 'em for the weekend; they're not serious enough for work.
In a season of small clothes, nothing looks worse than a tug-of-war, so quit yanking.  If it makes you that uneasy, it doesn't fit.
No matter how spectacular your outfit may appear, if you're bent, slouched, or hunched over, your entire look is ruined.  Straighten up and fly right and you'll instantly look polished!

Summer Trend Alert!

White is the new black, at least when it comes to nails. White nails look fresh and clean. Plus, it works with all skin tones. The edgy way to wear this mod trend is with a superbright, shiny opaque white like Sally Hansen’s All The White Stuff ($6). It looks like white patent leather. For a softer, more wearable approach, try a sheer white with a hint of shimmer. To get a flawless application, start with a base coat followed by a top coat, then your polish. Yes, you read that right: white polish is very vulnerable to streaking, so make the white coat your last.

Do You Have Your Little White Dress Yet?

By now you’ve probably heard the headlines—It’s the season of the dress—but as summer approaches, the spotlight is on the little white dress. The LBD will always be a staple, but as things heat up you can shelve your black dresses for something lighter and brighter. White is a clean and classic look for warmer weather, and since fashion edicts only allow is to wear it for a few months, you might as well get busy. The look is decidedly sweet and innocent, with eyelet, crochet and soft feminine details rounding things out. Remember, you should only wear nude toned undergarments with white. For summer I love Fashion Forms Gel Petals, which give you a super smooth look without a bra, and their No Slip Strapless—adhesive silicone cups that are reusable and never slip!

An Old Favorite Scent Gets A New Life!

Pucci, the brand that helped define the ‘60s fashion is going back to its roots with a “new” fragrance. Pucci is releasing a reformulated version of its first fragrance, called Vivara, in the fall.

The original Vivara was launched in 1966 but has been unavailable for about two decades. Though the new scent will have the same name, it has been reimagined for the modern market.

The scent sounds very Italian and romantic: it will have topnotes of galbanum, Italian bergamot, and amaretto with elements of jasmine, narcissus flower, Florentine Iris, and more. It will be available starting in September at high-end department stores, including Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus. The eau de parfum will be available in a 50-milliliter bottle ($85) and an 80-milliliter bottle for $110.

We’ve all seen women walking around in tights and ballet slippers for a few seasons now, and the style’s not going anywhere. Top designers have been incorporating the ballet trend into their spring collections, imitating the way that dancers look on the street when they leave the studio.

Lightweight silks and linens are stylish, and wearing tie-front sweaters will make your bare dresses office-appropriate. Ballet accessories will also spice up your smoky grays and neutral outfits.

Add flair to your hairstyle with Bondi Bands

Bad hair day? Pressed for time? Try wearing a Bondi Band in your hair. They’ll easily compliment your outfit, and it will make your look appear more “finished.”

Time To Tan!

As I get older—read: wrinklier—I try to limit my “tan” to the kind you find in a bottle. I am always on the hunt for the self-tanner that will turn me the color of Cindy Crawford, but with reddish blonde hair and freckles, there isn’t a can or bottle in the world that’s going to achieve that! Since I’ve tried pretty much every self-tanner on the market, people tend to ask my opinion on the subject. I am no expert, but between me and some of my friends, here’s where we stand this Spring.
I love Neutrogena foam self-tanner ...I uselevel 3-dark...it's the kind that gives you a little more color each time. Doesn't seem to stain sheets or clothes. I do it before I go to bed, have never hadstreaking and since it's not "immediate" color, my sheets don't get stained.   Feet are a problem because they sweat. I try and just do a light application on them. Be sure to exfoliate your feet--and body--really well first. I also usuallymoisturize my body lightly and then put the tanner on.
My friend Pam, who is fairly dark naturally—the maven of beauty and skincare products--likes the following:
St Tropez whipped mousse tanner
Clarins tanning milk spf 6--Tan level Dark
She also says…DO NOT BUY as I looked orange
ModelCo bronze airbrush sun (pink can) OrFusion Beauty. Glow Fusion protein tan
For the face, my pal Jim in Los Angeles offers his input:
Jergens natural glow is out.. Aveeno with SPF 20 tinted moisturizer is in.. And Kiehls has just come out with a SPF 15 tinted moisturizer Light, Med. Dark...very nice!

The Best Way To Wear Capri Pants

Rule 1: Pick the perfect length. Capris should fall to mid-calf. Avoid too-short capris that hit just below the knee, as they look more like clam diggers (read: dated!).

Rule 2: Choose the best cut and pattern. The most flattering capri pants fit close to the body (but not skin tight) and are straight-legged or have a slight flare. Avoid capris that are tapered, which can make your hips look disproportionately big; or those that are too wide, which can make you look like a sailor wearing high-waters. If you're looking to slim your hips, vertical stripes can work wonders. Stay away from big, bold prints unless you are really slender.

Rule 3: Wear the right shoes. Capris work best with flats or small heels (like kitten heels). Slides or flip-flops makes them weekend casual. The biggest no-no: High heels.

Rule 4: Learn to dress them up. While capris are easiest to wear on weekends, they're also appropriate for most office environments except the most conservative. To dress them up for work, choose capris in a fabric like linen, stretch cotton, or silk. Then pair them with a sleek sweater set or simple shell. Avoid wearing a suit blazer, which can throw off the proportion of the capris. If you must wear a jacket, look for a capri suit, or choose a close-fitting jacket with three-quarter-length sleeves.

Spring’s Hot Shades for your Nails

Stay pretty this spring with these latest trends!
On the light side: For manicures and pedicures, stick to light pinks, like Revlon’s Blushed or Chanel’s Naked Pink.
On the other side of the palette: Go with light purples that’ll make you pop. Try Wet & Wild’s Lilac Champagne or Blackberry Purple from Sephora.

Beauty tips from Bobbi Brown

Not only does Bobbi Brown have her own national brand of makeup, she gives tips and advice to today’s hottest Hollywood stars.
The biggest mistake women over 40 make?
They either give up and resort to sweats and matronly haircuts, or they get fanatical about procedures to help them look young. But there’s a middle ground that’s easy to achieve. Start by drinking more water and going for walks.
The three beauty products everyone over 40 should use?
Without a doubt—moisturizer, concealer, and blush. I know firsthand that skin gets drier as you age. And without moisturizer, makeup doesn’t look as good. I love concealer because it makes you look less tired. I use one shade lighter than my foundation and apply it on the inner corners and underneath my eyes. I never go without blush, either, because it keeps you from looking washed out. We lose color in our skin as we get older, and a natural-color blush on the apples of the cheeks brings it back. To make blush pop and last longer, swipe a brighter shade on top.

Dos & Don'ts of Wearing Brights! --How To Look Chic, Not Loud This Spring

(from glamour.com)
Don't Forget Quality:
Don't invest in cheapies; the poor stitching and fabric quality will be magnified in bright colors.
Do Mix with Metallics:
Skip black or white accessories, and instead try silver shoes and bags with clothes in cooler colors, like green and blue.
Wear gold add-ons with warmer tones, such as yellow. Also, don't worry about wearing metallic bags and shoes at the same time; it's not too much as long as your sandals are strappy and your purse isn't a suitcase.
Go Light:
If the color is bright, the fabric should be soft. Silks are much easier to wear than think opaques, which can look harsh.
